Yachtmaster programme

The majority of Round Britain Experience clients elect to take their yachtmaster assessment. Some do it because they are looking for a professional qualification; others do it simply to crown their achievement.

During the Experience, there is the opportunity to earn RYA qualifications up to and including Coastal Skipper, but the truth is that after circum-navigating the British Isles you will have all the experience necessary to qualify as a yachtmaster. Indeed the yachtmaster assessment used to take place during the last week of the Experience.

In 2003 we removed the yachtmaster preparation and assessment from the 12 week Experience for two reasons. Firstly it reduced the likelihood of conflict between the need to prepare clients for the exam and the enjoyment of the final leg and, secondly, by separating the yachtmaster preparation and assessment into a separate programme we were able to offer a more complete package to candidates through the additional preparation time.

We have refined the programme further. If you wish to undertake your Yachtmaster assessment you will be transported from St. Katharine's Dock to our base in Brixham, Devon for an additional 2-week programme. After a comprehensive briefing you and your co-conspirators will be despatched, probably across the channel, without an instructor on board, giving you a perfect opportunity to put your own skippering skills to the test. Upon your return you are joined by our chief instructor who merely polishes your performance before the independent examiner steps on board towards the end of the second week.
