RYA motorboat training

At Plain Sailing our friendly professional Instructors strive to provide you with tuition and boats of the highest standard. Our aim is to assist you to become safer at sea and take full advantage of the pleasures and challenges Motor Cruising has to offer.

There are series of courses designed for the complete beginner for leisure to Offshore Yachtmaster's with commercial endorsements. The shore-based courses are run in our purpose built classroom situated on the marina. Practical training takes place on board the twin engine Motor Cruisers.

Accommodation on board, breakfast, lunch, waterproof hire, fuel and mooring fees are all included in the price. Whilst training we visit harbours and marinas in the Southwest area including Torbay, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Plymouth . Practical training area will depend on weather and the level of course.



Introduction - 1 Day

This one day course is a introduction to Motorboating. This day can be used for training or for sitting back and relaxing.

Helmsman's - 2 Days

The aim of this two day course is to teach boat handling and safety within a defined area.

*Engines and drives
*Engine operation and maintenance
*Safety and seamanship
*Rules of the road
*Boat preparation
*Boat handling

This course starts 09:30hrs Monday - 16:00hrs Tuesday.

Day Skipper - 4 Days

Pre Course Knowledge: Day Skipper theory & basic seamanship.

Aim: To teach boat handling up to standard required to skipper a motor cruiser in familiar water, on board a motor cruiser at least 7m LOA.

Syllabus: Preparation for sea, boat handling, navigation, pilotage, passage making, meteorology, rules of the road, engines, emergency situations, anchoring, night cruising.

This 4 day course starts 09:30hrs Monday - 16:00hrs Thursday.

Coastal Skipper - 5 Days

Pre Course requirements: navigation to Coastal Skipper shore based standard boat handling to day Skipper practical standard.

Aim: to teach skills and techniques required to skipper a motor cruiser safely on Coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

Syllabus: passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as skipper, radar, boat handling, use of GPS, meteorology, adverse weather conditions and emergency situations.

Yachtmaster Prep - 5 Days

Pre course requirements: minimum sea time:50 days at sea, 2,500 sea miles, including at least 5 passages over 60 miles, acting as skipper for at least two passages and 5 days experience as skipper, SRC (Radio course) & First Aid course.

Aim: The Yachtmaster candidate is required to demonstrate competence on board a motor cruiser on any passage, during which the vessel is no more than 150miles from harbour.

Syllabus: International regulations for preventing collisions at sea, safety, boat handling, general seamanship, include maintenance, responsibilities of skipper, navigation, meteorology and signals.

Yachtmaster Exam - 8 to 12 hrs

On the fifth day of the Yachtmaster prep, your instructor will leave the boat and an independent examiner will join you, he will ask you individually to demonstrate your ability as skipper of an offshore motor cruiser and may also ask questions on any part of the syllabus.

International Certificate of Competence

Duration: 1 to 4 days - depending on how much experience you have

Pre Course Requirements Some practical experience & pre course reading, passport-size photo.

Content: Practical close quarter manoeuvres, Man over board, safety, Interpretation of Navigation Charts, Pilotage, Harbour/Coastal Regulations.

Aim: Boat handling skills and building confidence, a requirement for Skippers cruising in France, the Balearics and the Canaries.

Own Boat Tuition

Own boat tuition is a great way of familiarizing yourself with the strengths and weakness of your vessel, rib, Sports boat or Motor Cruiser. With a professional Instructor on board you will discover the full potential of your vessel, ideal training for all the family. All RYA practical courses can be taught on board your own vessel or the day can be tailored to suit your personal requirements. The Instructor will join your vessel at your chosen marina/harbour.
