At Plain Sailing our aim is to improve your sailing skills to a level recognised by the Royal Yachting Association, in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. There can be no better place to start your holiday or training than the scenic & picturesque South West Coast or from sunny Portual with our partners at the Algarve Sailing Centre who are also a RYA recognised training centre.

We run training and sailing all year round, to suit all abilities from beginners up to Yachtmaster Ocean and Cruises in UK & Foreign waters for individuals & family groups.



RYA Start Sailing

This course provides a short intorduction to sail cruising for novices. By the end of the course, participants will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and be aware of safety on board.

This is a 2 day course that is run over a weekend.

RYA Competent Crew - Sail

This compentent crew course introduces the complete beginner to cruising and teaches personal saftey, seamanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht.

This can either be a 5 day course starting from Sunday 18:00hrs - 16:00hrs Friday or can be taken in 3x weekends.

RYA Day Skipper Sail

The course will show you how to take command of your vessel for a short passage in daylight hours. This will involve planning the trip, briefing the crew, boat handling, navigation and many other skills. The pre-course requirements are Day Skipper theory level, 5 days logged sea days, 100 sea miles and 4 night hours.

This can either be a 5 day course starting from Sunday 18:00hrs - 16:00hrs Friday or can be taken in 3x weekends.

RYA 9 Day Day Skipper Combined - Navigation & Practical on sail

This 9 day course covers both RYA Day Skipper theory and practical courses.

The Day Skipper navigation is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for Competent Crew. you will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board.
The Day Skipper practical course will show you how to take command of your vessel for a short passage in daylight hours. This will involve planning the trip, briefing the crew, boat handling, navigation and many other skills.
The pre-course requirements are reading up to Day Skipper theory level, 5 days logged sea time, 100 miles and 4 night hours.

The course will start 18:00hrs Friday - 16:00hrs following Sunday. You will stay on board one of Plain Sailings yachts for the duration of the course.

RYA Coastal Skipper Sail

This course will show the more experienced Day Skipper the skills required to skipper the vessel in coastal/day & night passages.
Pre-course requirements include Coastal Skipper theory level, 300 logged sea miles + 8 night hours, SRC radio certificate. 5-day course.

This is a 5 day course starting from Sunday 18:00hrs - 16:00hrs Friday.

RYA Yachtmaster prep & exam - Sail

This is a preparation course for the advanced/experienced Skipper to take the RYA/ D.o.T. examination. It is a ticket of recognition as a skilled and competent skipper capable of negotiating offshore waters.

Pre-course requirements include 2,500 logged sea miles, SRC and First Aid Certificates. 5-7-day course.

This is a 5 day course starting 18:00hrs Sunday - 16:00hrs Friday. The examiner will join the yacht either on Thurday evening or Friday morning. The insrructor will depart the yacht while the examiner is on board.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean - Sail

The Yachtmaster Ocean is experienced and competent to skipper a yacht on passages of any length in all parts of the world.

The exam constists of an oral and a written test.
During the oral test the candidate may be required to answer questions on all aspects of ocean pasage making in a yacht, including passage planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management and yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs.
The written exam will include questions on sights and sight reduction and worldwide meteorology.

International Certificate of Competence

The I.C.C ticket is recognition of basic boat handling skills. The assessment involves both a written / Oral and practical testing. It is a requirement for Skippers cruising in European waters. This can be done in a minimum of one day, depending on experience.
An additional theory examination is taken for I.C.C. Inland waterways (CEVNI). This is a multi-question test paper and takes approx 15mins.

Own Boat Tuition

Power or Sail we can provide you with a professional Instructor on board your vessel. The tuition will be tailored to your own personal needs, meeting you aboard your vessel at its berth. The instructor may teach up to 5 persons. We assist clients in familiarizing themselves with their vessels, boat handling, negotiating unfamiliar Harbour entries, passage planning, sail trimming, ideal training for all members of the family. Own boat tuition builds confidence and so allows you to enjoy your vessel to its full potential.

One-day Sailing

One day sailing is an ideal opportunity to experience the pleasures and possible challenges sailing luxury yachts have to offer. Whilst on holiday or to improve your sailing skills the day will be tailored to your requirements with the choice of Brixham, Dartmouth or Torquay for points of departure.

You can meet your Yacht and Skipper at Brixham, Dartmouth or Torquay Marinas and set sail for Berry Head, Thatcher Rock, Preston, Paignton, Goodrington and Broad Sands, visiting Fishcombe and Elberry Cove before returning to the marina. Alternatively spend a day sailing along the beautiful Devon Coast and Torbay. Visiting the historic area of Dartmouth and Dittisham for lunch or picnic aboard the yacht in one of Torbay's picturesque anchorage's.

At Plain Sailing we give you the opportunity of being at the helm, hoisting the sails and working the winches of a yacht crewed by willing hands or by your own family and friends. Your Yacht will comply with the D.o.T code of practice for small commercial vessels, providing you with a professional Skipper to ensure your safety.

Weekend Sailing

Weekend sailing is cruising at its very best. Departing from the historic fishing port of Brixham or the River Dart, home of the Britannia Royal Naval College where all the Royal Princes have been trained. You will sail along some of England’s most beautiful coastline building up your sailing skills and confidence.

At Plain Sailing our aim is to assist you experience the delights and challenges sailing has to offer, in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, suitable for beginners and experienced sailors. The only qualification required is a sense of fun and adventure.

For the absolute beginner, we give you the opportunity of being at the helm, hoisting the sails and working the winches of a yacht crewed by willing hands or by your own family and friends. Your yacht will comply with the D.O.T code of practice for small commercial vessels providing you with a professional skipper to ensure your safety. For those experienced sailors, your professional Instructor will help you fine-tune and improve upon your sailing skills.

All of our yachts are maintained to the highest of standards and have on board all the safety equipment and navigation instruments required for offshore sailing. Life jackets and harness are standard equipment and clients are asked to wear them whilst on board.

All you need to bring is suitable clothing for the seasons (multiple thin layers are recommended, remember the summer evenings can get rather chilly). Deck shoes or trainers (no black sole shoes please). Personal wash kit, a pillowcase, hat, gloves (winter months) and sun/wind block packed in a soft hold all.

Crusing - French Coast & Channel Islands

The South West Coast is ideally placed for starting our cruise to north coast of France & the Channel Islands. These sailing areas are rich in deep water and small secluded anchorages, and has held a particular fascination for British Yachtsmen for many years. With their wonderful indented coastline and its contrasts between ragged rocks and sandy beaches are a delight to explore.

The Channel Islands - Jersey, Guernsey & Alderney are just a 12-hour hop,
North Brittany coast is the nearest foreign shore to the western part of the south coast of England and with a fair wind is only a 20-hour sail from Brixham.
You can be confident of the quality & luxury of the Plain Sailing yacht, which will be your home for the next seven days. The professional Skipper will show you round the yacht and introduce you to your fellow crewmembers. All enthusiastic sailors are welcome of all sailing levels. Evening meals are taken on shore, giving you the opportunity to sample the local cuisine (not included in the course fee), whilst breakfast & lunches will be provided on board to take full advantage of sailing time. You & the party on board will decide the sailing itinerary for each day, with of course the expert advice & guidance of the Skipper.

The 7-day cruise covers a wide variety of sailing challenges and is an ideal way of gaining experience in all fields of yachting. The Cruises are fun, enjoyable, relaxed sailing holidays for all and a great way to explore new areas for the first time.
