Shore-based training

RYA Shore based courses for Sail, Power, or Motor are held in the classroom at the Plain Sailing Brixham Marina Office. Easily accessible by Road, Rail and Coach, Brixham has all the facilities you require to make your visit pleasant and comfortable.

Each shore-based course is run at least once a month, however for group bookings of 2 or more persons we may be able to schedule a date to suit you (dependent on the type of course required). Meals and accommodation are not included in the course fees, however there is accommodation and restaurants to suit all pockets within walking distance of the classroom.

Basic Navigtaion

The course is a 2 day basic navigtaion and safety course, which provides an introduction to the basic skills required before taking a small boat to sea or taking an active part in running a boat. The syllabus includes charts, buoyage, navigtaion, safety, anchoring, tides, rules of the road, electronic navigtaion, weather forecasts, pilotage and passage planning. Day Skipper Theory - Motor, Power & Sail

The Day Skipper navigation is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for Competent Crew. you will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board.

This is a 5 day course that runs from 09:30hrs Monday - 16:00hrs Friday.

Day Skipper - Combined Theory & Practical - Motor & Sail

This 9 day course covers both RYA Day Skipper theory and practical courses.

The Day Skipper navigation is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for Competent Crew. you will find this course invaluable if you want to learn how to start making decisions on board.
The Day Skipper practical course will show you how to take command of your vessel for a short passage in daylight hours. This will involve planning the trip, briefing the crew, boat handling, navigation and many other skills. The pre-course requirements are Day Skipper theory level, 5 days logged sea miles, 4 night hours.

The course will start 18:00hrs Friday - 16:00hrs following Sunday. You will stay on board one of Plain Sailings yachts for the duration of the course.

Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory - Motor & Sail

This is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of the subjects in the Day Skipper course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.

The assumed level of knowledge before starting this course is the Day Skipper Shorebased course.

This is a 5 day course that runs from 09:30hrs Monday - 16:00hrs Friday.

Yachtmaster Ocean Theory - Motor & Sail

This is a course in astro-navigation and worldwide meteorology which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a knowledge of all subjects covered in the other shorebased courses.

This is a 6 day course and can be done all in one or split into 2 groups of 3.
